Oh soot!

It's that time of year here in Honduras where they burn the sugar cane fields.  This results in ashes EVERYWHERE.  My house is a typical Honduran house where the walls and roof don't meet (there are not ceilings...) this makes it quite easy for the ashes to drift in as they wish.  Nothing like waking up looking in the mirror and you look like a native warrior!  Ok...it wasn't that bad, i just had an ashy smudge on my cheek...there must have been an ash on my pillow.  It did teach me one thing, make sure I actually look in a mirror before I answer the door or go out in public...something I don't always do.

Not only does the soot end up in my bed, but in every nook and cranny of my house, in my pila, on my door step, on my nice clean laundry hanging on the line, etc.  I was doing dishes outside the other day, the has become my custom since the water is so scarce lately.  It's too much of a pain to keep filling up a bucket and bringing it into the kitchen, it makes it much easier just to wash the dishes in my pila.  Anyway, I looked up and it was like it was snowing...the big difference it was black chunks falling out of the sky.  I tried to snap a picture of it, but it looked like I was just trying to take a picture of a cloud!  :)

Happy Father's Day!

Ok...I know what most of you are thinking (because I thought the same thing when my assistant said we had to think of a Father's Day project this week...)...and no I'm not jumping the gun!  Here in Honduras they celebrate Father's Day today, so yesterday for our art project we made Father's Day cards!

Oh the things I learn...

Sometimes I hear things and I just want to laugh...and try not to offend others.

One of my friends told me the other day I had to wait and wash the dishes, which I was pretty confused about since we were just waiting around for something to finish cooking.  I thought I'd get a jump on the dishes we had already dirtied.  You ask why I had to wait...because my hands were hot (from cooking tortillas) and if you put your hands in cold water when your hands are hot...something terrible happens.  I don't know what terrible thing happens, but it just isn't good.  I washed the dishes anyway, and my hands are fine.

Another thing you want to avoid is eating something hot and drinking something cold during the same meal.  It will ruin your teeth.  Now I suppose if you have extreme tooth sensitivity then you might not want to mix the hot and cold, but as far as I know your teeth wont fall out or become damaged if you do.  Along with the subject of cold drinks, make sure if you have a cough, a cold, a sore throat, a tickle in your throat...DO NOT drink anything cold!  It will just make you even more sick!

And the next thing...if you eat something you need to drink something.  I ate a baleada the other day without a drink...they said I would become empachada.  Now I'm not exactly sure what that means, but from the descriptions I've been given it's when your stomach is stuck with food.  Don't you worry, I am alive and well after eating my baleada without a drink.

The list goes on an on about common superstitions...

The Farm

We've been talking about things on a farm in prepa lately...and here is my bulletin!  :)  Honestly, it's not exactly the size I wanted...I wanted it bigger and more animals, etc.  But when you have someone volunteer to help you and it doesn't come out exactly how you want it, you say thank you and accept it!  :)
